THIS WAS POSTED ON THE BDOS UNDERGROUND BLOG IN ANSWER TO THE CRY FOR A CONSUMER ORGANIZATION IN BARBADOS
You know guys, we at Bdos Consumer Watch are very intrigued by these discussions.
We are hoping, that . judging from what is happening, it appears that its only within the last two weeks or so that some Bajans are aware that ” a consumer organization is required”.
Our question to everyone who sees the consumer as the one with the power is ” Why are we not exercising that power”. There have been several attemptes at “consumer organizations” in Barbados and for what ever reason, they never seem to become vibrant. This is the main reason why we at BCW decided to try something different and see how much success we would have.
Until everyone, including the moderators and callers to Brass Tacts get up off their butts and put their hands up and either join or form that said consumer organisation, this type of discussion will go on ad infinitum.
We at BCW are ready……We await the readiness of the consumers of Barbados.

Do trade unions and the myriad of other organisations see their roles as inclusive of advocacy and the pursuit of consumer protection? I say again I smile when the socially better off talk about consumers needing to get their acts together as if they too are not consumers. Trade unions have a commonality of interest in consumerism since their members rights are their concerns and could well be drivers of any consumer initiative.
I am heartened to have found your blog! I have long wondered why Barbados did not have more of a consumer advocate presence, and have said so in my coverage of consumer protection issues in Latin America & the Caribbean at The Temas Blog. I'm going to add you to my blogroll and subscribe to your feed (you do have one, don't you? you should feature that subscribe button prominently). If there's any other way I might help out (perhaps a guest post on The Temas Blog about the state of consumer protection in Barbados, and what role you hope to play, and/or what sort of consumer advocacy is needed, along with an invitation for people to participate on the blog?), let me know.
